Philagrafika 2010

After visiting the Tino Seghal exhibition mentioned in the previous post I would hop on the NJ Transit and head for Philly to check out Philagrafika 2010 - the first ever citywide printmaking festival taking over 90+ of the city's galleries, museums, and other venues. I would be in dreamland at Philagrafika and would love to spend a weekend or more exploring it, especially the exhibitions incorporating pattern and ornamentation! Art Via Experience

If I were able to make a trip to New York right now I would love to experience the Tino Sehgal exhibition at the Guggenheim. An article in the NY Times describes him as a conceptual artist, but I think his work borders on performance art in which the viewer is a participant. I won't attempt to describe his work, but I highly recommend reading the NY Times review. If you are lucky enough to go to the museum then I would also definitely check out their newly opened restaurant The Wright pictured below. Due to the "conceptualness" of Mr. Sehgal's work I'm not attaching any images from the exhibition. Now - March 10, 2010

Spoonflower Magic

A few days ago I received my first fabric sample from Spoonflower! Spoonflower is a web-based company that digitally prints custom designs onto fabric. The process is simple, quick, and mess free unlike hand-printing with dyes and paint - it really is like magic!

I've been excited to try the process out so I uploaded a pattern that I designed awhile ago called Morocco Gold. When you send any project out to print you loose control over some aspects of your design - mainly color management. Spoonflower doesn't except color standards for matching to, but they do provide you with a lot of great tools to help you get the color right the first time.

I had my design printed on quilting weight cotton. An 8x8 inch sample is $6. Definitely start with a sample before you purchase any yardage. I was happy with how the gold color printed, but the white didn't stand out enough. I think I need to try a darker color for more contrast - maybe green or orange. I'd eventually like to make a sink skirt for my kitchen with this fabric.

Anthropologie in Bloom

Anthropologie's store windows are always incredible. This spring's display is full of blossoming flowers created from discarded plastic bottle necks that were cut and painted. The flowers are both beautiful and green! I would love to make some to install in the window above my desk.

Daily Candy Weddings

Daily Candy is an email list that I look forward to reading everyday. It keeps me up to date on all the cool new happenings and wonderful things to see and do. I subscribe to the New York, Chicago, Everywhere, Travel, and now Weddings editions!


It's perfect timing for me. My fiance Alan and I got engaged in November and are beginning to plan our wedding. I know the Daily Candy emails will provide us with great ideas. If you don't already subscribe you should check it out.

Beginning a Blog

Over the past three years I've grown addicted to reading blogs like Design Sponge and have seen many mornings vanish trying to keep up with them. While I love to read them I've decided its finally time to try writing my own.

The most difficult step in starting this so far has been deciding on a name. One that expresses my identity and encompasses all of the things I want to write about. I've decided for now to call it M Prints.

I've tested out a lot of names and googled them only to find numerous others had the same idea. About 6 months ago I decided I liked M Prints and googled it...there was only one somewhat similar hit. I was relieved...until a couple of days ago. I tried to use it as a user name on Etsy and it was taken. I googled it again and "Oh no!" there were now several hits that led to small design businesses. I guess I need to learn to act a little quicker. With the economy and increasing ease of technology, designers everywhere seem to be creating online businesses. Regardless, I've decided to stick with it, because so far it seems to do what I need it to...


The M represents my last name Morris. I would eventually like to recreate the M monogram as more of a family crest.

Prints represents me as a surface designer and lover of patterns.

M Prints together expresses my interest in writing about the things that make and have made an imprint on me. Encompassing subjects such as family history and heirlooms, adventurous trips, delicious food, and design, design, design!
